A first knife fair in Monteils, with twelve southern cutlers

Midi Libre announced the first knife fair in Monteils, near Alès, set for Sunday 27 September from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Temple on the Place du Puits. Twelve cutlers from the Gard, the Hérault and the Vaucluse were taking part, all professionals for whom this is an official trade.

The idea came from Cédric Cousin, a professional firefighter, who organised it with the Monteils hunting society. For him the knife is a useful tool in his job and, since he loves cooking, the basic kitchen utensil too. According to the article, apart from the fair held every year in Marguerittes, near Nîmes, there had been no gathering of this kind in the Alès region.

What stood out to me was the way Vincent Salel, a cutler based in Monteils, describes his trade. He talks about real craftsmanship: wood, horn or carbon fibre for handles, and for the steel, finishes such as damascus, bead-blasting or polishing. He compares the precision of the work to goldsmithing and regrets that it tends to be fading away.

The fair was devoted to showing and selling pieces made entirely by hand, often one of a kind. For anyone interested in handmade blades and handles, it is a chance to talk directly with the people who make them.
