M64: ModRetro launches its FPGA-based N64 – featuring original modules, 4K resolution, and overclocking capabilities.

ModRetro has officially launched the M64: an FPGA-based Nintendo 64 replica designed to work with original cartridges, and it is also available for delivery to Germany. Heise provides a detailed report on the technology behind the device.

Inside, an AMD Artix UltraScale+ FPGA operates using 16-nanometer technology, and it is fanless, making it completely silent. It supports original N64 cartridges from all regions, as well as original controllers. Additionally, there are wireless alternatives available, such as those from 8BitDo, and ModRetro's own M64 Pro controller. The Expansion Pak and Controller Pak are integrated. Up to four controllers are supported for local split-screen gaming.

For modern televisions, the M64 features HDMI output with resolutions up to 4K at 60 fps, optionally with scanline and CRT filters. A future adapter for CRT televisions is planned. It also includes a microSD card (16 GB pre-installed) and USB ports. At launch, not all games are running perfectly – the compatibility list includes titles such as Donkey Kong 64, Perfect Dark, and Jet Force Gemini.

Notably, ModRetro aims not only to play classic games but also to promote new cartridge-based games and remasters. The company is backed by Palmer Luckey (Oculus/Anduril), who previously developed FPGA hardware for Game Boy cartridges with the Chromatic handheld.

The price in Europe is €249.95 for the console and €97.95 for the Pro controller. Whether it can compete with the Analogue 3D remains to be seen, but the M64 is certainly an interesting piece of hardware.
