67 live python snakes seized at Kapıkule
The trade in exotic animals comes up often on this page, so I wanted to share a recent news story. According to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, 67 live python snakes were seized at the Kapıkule Customs Gate after someone tried to bring them into the country illegally.
According to the report, National Parks and conservation teams inspected people who showed suspicious behavior in the customs area. Thanks to the careful work of the teams, the snakes were found. The seized animals were placed under protection and rehabilitation has begun.
What stays with me from this story is that smuggling snakes across borders this way is a serious risk for both the animals and people. As a hobbyist with a terrarium, I can see how rare and interesting species look tempting. But buying an animal of unknown origin can feed the smuggling chain.
