Magnetic Laboratory releases a domestic Normal Position cassette in limited quantities

An AV Watch article told me that Magnetic Laboratory (Jiki Kenkyujo) is releasing a new music cassette called "Normal Position/Type-I". It costs 1,100 yen each and goes on sale on October 13. Quantities are limited, and it is sold only at its direct store, MAG-LAB.

Pre-sales will take place at the Magnetic Laboratory booth during the event "CASSETTE WEEK MARKET 2026" on October 12, where visitors can also listen to samples. It is positioned as the second new cassette tape after the "High Position/Type-II", released in July 2026.

The highlight is the use of high-density magnetic material. It is said to have excellent characteristics even among Normal Position (Type-I) tapes. According to the article, it offers body in the low and mid frequencies as well as good high-frequency response, with a flat frequency response across the whole band. The index card follows the same design as the High Position/Type-II: silver index on black, with writing space on part of the front and on the back, plus one index sticker included. The tapes are assembled at the domestic facility "Jiki-ken Cassette Laboratory", one at a time.

What pleases me personally is the fact that fresh tape for cassette decks is being made in Japan. However well you service a deck, it loses half its joy if you cannot get tape for it. I will wait for the owners' impressions of how it actually sounds.

I suspect there are plenty of deck owners here too. Do you usually use Normal or High Position tape?
