The coin goes digital: relief signature on the 100-euro gold coin "Die Judenbuche"

In 2026, Münze Deutschland announced a world first that makes me curious as a collector: the AuVerIn relief signature. It links a real coin with digital content, and the first coin with this signature is the 100-euro gold coin "Die Judenbuche" from the series "Masterpieces of German Literature", released in June 2026.

What is special is that the coding is not a stuck-on chip but is built directly into the relief of the coin. A free app can unlock additional content with it, such as certificates of authenticity and background information. At the same time, the signature is meant to serve as a forgery-proof feature that proves the coin is genuine.

I find the notes on data protection remarkable. According to Münze Deutschland, there is no need for a login or user profile, and there is no tracking. Once loaded, the certificates and information are even available offline, for example in airplane mode.

The coin itself was approved by the cabinet in December 2025 for release in 2026. Orders could be placed in a window from 18 March to 8 April. According to a post from 1 July, it should have reached customers since mid-June.

Whether digital extras will catch on with coins remains to be seen. But as protection against forgery and proof of origin, I find the idea quite convincing.
